Sightseeing and Touring Information for Kangaroo Island

Kangaroo Island, located offshore from South Australia's Fleurieu Peninsula, is Australia's third largest Island, with 540 km of coastline.

After a 110 km picturesque journey from Adelaide, travel on the short 50 minute ferry journey from Cape Jervis across Backstairs Passage, to Penneshaw, a small Cornish style seaside village, ideally located for your Island holiday at Seafarers Holiday House. Penneshaw boasts wonderful restaurants, stunning beach with safe swimming, a golf course, art and craft galleries, bush walking close by and an opportunity to enjoy a mix of relaxation and sightseeing from your very own house.

Backstairs Passage forms a protective barrier that has preserved the island as a living museum. The absence of predators such as foxes and destructive rabbits, together with more than a third of the Island preserved as national and conservation parks, has ensured the survival of fairy penguin colonies, the Kangaroo Island kangaroo, fur seals, and sea lions as well as Tammar wallabies (extinct on most of mainland Australia).

Penneshaw has a penguin rookery and we recommend a nocturnal penguin tour as a "must do" on your list! Take a walk from Seafarers, round the town after dusk and see the gentle Tammar wallabies - often eating on the front lawns or hopping up the road. Walk up into the hills and into the Conservation Park, and sit quietly, maybe you'll be lucky enough to see the rare red-tailed black cockatoo, an echidna or other native animals and birds.

Introduced species included the koala, platypus and ring-tailed possum who have all survived alongside echidnas, goannas and over 265 bird species, with 243 of them exclusive to KI. Visit the Flinders Chase National Park on the South Coast and enjoy the clean, green environment whilst photographing the spectacular land forms in the shape of Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch.

Don't forget Seal Bay, home to the Australian Sea lions. Take a guided tour and learn the history of this unique colony.

Follow the food and wine trail - enjoy local wines, marron, rock lobster, prawns, oysters and King George whiting with boutique cheeses, free-range poultry, fat lamb, honey, olives and oil.

Visit the local "Rabbit Warren bakery' in Kingscote , tour the Island Pure Sheep dairy, call into galleries or a honey farm, take a day out to visit lighthouses, stop at near secluded beaches for a walk or swim. Fish off a jetty or beach, take a charter boat, relax and enjoy the nature and beauty, food and wine Kangaroo Island has to offer its visitors.

Having lived on the Island for 29 years, we know anything less than 3 days is not enough to enjoy its magic. A 3 night stay or longer at Seafarers House is a wonderful way to enjoy a mix of relaxing, sightseeing spectacular locations and exceptional wildlife.

Welcome.
Anne and John
